What Are the Key Skills in Interior Design?

There’s lots of skills to fine tune to be come the best interior designer you can be. Four key skills that I think are important…

The ability to your your initiative to discover what your clients like. I don’t follow trends and I couldn’t say what my style is.. I want to discover my clients style. A lot of the times clients don’t know what they like or want and we go through a process to work that out. It’s very rewarding when I am proposing concepts and the clients love it.

Create a good client / interior designer relationship. I am always excited when a project is finished, its amazing feeling to see all the hard work come together. All the hard work is now for the clients to enjoy and we naturally part ways. I do find myself missing my clients.

It is important to respond to clients call and emails as soon as possible. I like my clients feeling comfortable that they can reach out to ask questions or have a chat about the project. Their project is a big deal in their life, they are investing a lot of trust and money into. Sometimes they can experience anxiety so it’s best to chat with them to make sure we are on the same page and they are feeling confident.

The ability to accept criticism. I studied Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours) at the best and most sort after university, RMIT. This is were I learnt to take on criticism. Criticism is an excellent way to learn what my clients don’t like.. it moves me to explore other options that will lead to discovering what they do like. I always tell clients to let me know if I propose something they are not into, to let me know!

There are so many key skills to make an interior designer, these are just a few. Key skills will differ from designer to designer. . One of the things I love about being an interior designer, I am always learning, being challenged creatively. Certainly give your self a pat on the back when your design is finished, take lots of photos and be proud of what your are created. It’s a pretty good buzz.
