The 3 Fs of Interior Design

The three F’s of interior design are Floorplan, Finishes and Fixtures.

The Floor Plan

Floor plans are scale drawings on the floor plan of the room or area being designed. A floor plan is like a Birds Eye view on the area and will show where everything goes. It’s a great visual tool to understand the layout of furniture placement or cabinetry design. It assists interior designers to work out where items are going to go, and what size the furniture or cabinetry should be. Floor plans are also a good tool to see how people will circulate in the space and if it is functional.

The Finishes

Surface materials and finishes are the architectural surfaces of your home. Tiles, flooring, bench tops, wall paint, and cabinetry finishes are examples of surface finishes. Fixtures relate to tap-ware and accessories.

The Fixtures

Fixtures relate to tapware and bathroom and kitchen fixed accessories, like a hand towel holder or towel rail.

The art of collating surface finishes and fixtures is to select the perfect colour, sizing, and texture of each surface to work within the aesthetic direction and practical purpose of a space.

How does Shaping Interiors work with the three F’s?

Shaping Interiors offer a surface and fixtures design service. This service is ideal if you have design plans for your kitchen, bathrooms or laundry and need to select your surface finishes, tapware and accessories. We will create a well-curated sample board of a selection of cohesive finishes and fixtures that you can give to your builder, cabinet maker or tiler. We will work through a concept phase to narrow down what you really like and that suits your house so you feel confident and at ease with your surface finish and fixtures selections.
