How Is a Design Concept Developed?

The design concept is the initial stage of a project. It’s where ideas and inspirations develop into new designs. The concept is the underlying thinking and reasoning for any design. The concept design may be inspired by a notion, surrounding environment, existing elements, branding, or history.. The concept phase naturally progresses into finalizing the design, plans, selecting hard finishes and materials, and styling.

The first step is gathering information from the client. It is important to spend time with the clients on site going through the areas I am designing or styling. I need to learn what they need, like transform a bedroom into a new space like a reading room or furniture, art and decor. Find out their likes and objectives for the space.

There is a lot to take in on the 1st visit, so I like going back for a 2nd visit to investigate the site. This is where I will take a better look at what elements are staying, the size of the space, lighting and so. I will do a colour analysis on the elements staying as the new colours I bring have to work together. I really enjoy this part, learning about a space. The more time I spend or revisit a space, the more I learn. All the information gathered goes towards a strong concept design.

The aim of an interior design concept is creating and proposing a concept that appeals to the clients taste, needs and lifestyle. I believe in taking the time to consider the choices of finishes, textures, furniture, decor, fabrics, colour schemes that reflects the clients brief, their lifestyle and what make them feel good.

How is a design concept designed?

Trail and error, brainstorming and pulling ideas from the site investigation, looking a precedents. Sketch ideas, look at possibilities and determine what works and what doesn’t. Then start focusing on what is working and refine the design.
